Recently, I frequented a name-brand specialty coffee retailer. Since the whole beans were either in sealed packages or behind the counter where I could not pop one into my mouth to determine freshness, I held a conversation with the employees at that store asking how I would know if the coffee they were selling packaged on the shelves and open behind the counter were not only fresh--but kept fresh. The employees commented that the policy for their stores is for the whole beans sold packaged over the counter to be changed out every 2.5 months and for the beans behind the counter, because they had been opened, to be thrown away every 4 weeks. One customer waiting in line who heard their answers, walked out the door.
I leave you to determine if you feel like that policy constitutes "fresh roast."
